What is the one most obvious way for career advancement? That one way would be through promotion. When you produce quality work, plan and keep yourself on track, you will find that there many opportunities to gain promotions to advance to the career position you want. However, promotions will not just fall into your lap. Instead, it requires planning and developing supportive relationships to develop strategies that will really work and advance your career. Here are a few things you will need to do in order to achieve the promotions that you want.
The first strategy is to set goals. Without goals, you will have no clear idea of where you want to be in the future. Goals set direction, keep you focused and ensure you remain motivated. When you set those goals, you need to make sure that they are specific, clear and include both short term and long term goals. Short term goals ensure success in the near future, that will keep you motivated to stay on track. Short term goals may include heading a project that will show case your talent and ability to contribute to the current strategic initiatives of the department or company. Short term goals may also include identifying a cost saving strategy or implementation of new technology to stream line work processes. You can create a career development strategy that includes these goals and steps you will need to take in order to achieve them.
The next strategy step will be to understand the importance of networking. In today’s world, networking both in your company, your industry and online are essential for career advancement. When decision makers know who you are it is easier for them to make the decision to promote you. Participate in all networking opportunities. Whether that means finding an opportunity to chat with your superiors one on one or becoming an online expert on a particular topic through online social media, networking is an important tool in your career advancement. Give your superiors a chance to get to know your personality, see your work ethic in action and put a face to a name so they will remember you when it is promotion time.
A third strategy in career advancement through promotion will include a simple, two word phrase. Just ask. Difficult for most, but frequently those who gain promotions are those who ask for them. When you have experienced several successes and you feel confident that a promotion is warranted, then it may be time to ask for it. Ask for a meeting with your superior to discuss your accomplishments, skills and reasons why a promotion would make sense.
Career advancement often happens through both lateral and vertical promotion, but will require that you take action. Begin with these basic strategies in your own career so that you can start advancing.
